Hearing Teen Tries to Understand

Sometimes teenage boys can be sweet when you least expect it. That certainly is the case in the experience of "Winter" on the forum. Winter is a deaf teenage girl living in a small rural town. She expresses her frustration that many hearing boys she tried to date, would leave because they could not deal with her deafness. Now she is seeing a hearing teenage boy who is really trying - the boy loaded up with sign language books. This one sounds like a keeper, at least until Winter goes to college.

My own teenage years are far behind me, but I can identify with Winter's frustrations. Do you identify with Winter's frustrations? Share your own past frustrations with trying to date hearing teenagers, on the forum.

The author of a new book for young people, with a deaf main character, has posted on the forum about her book.  In her book "Flying to the Light," the deaf character is a young boy with a type of super power. I have not read this book. If you read it, go back to the forum and post your review!

What Great Speech You Have!

A student who has taken speech and language classes in college, has a different take on what it means when hearing people compliment deaf people on their speech. According to this student, the compliment means that they recognize that the deaf person put a lot of work into learning how to speak. Read the student's comment on the Readers Respond page on Deaf Speech.

Toxoplasmosis as a Cause of Hearing Loss

Do you know anyone whose hearing loss is a result of the toxoplasmosis parasite? And did you know that even though it is considered a risk factor for hearing loss, most newborns are not screened for toxoplasmosis? Fortunately, it is easy to avoid getting the parasite, so not that many babies lose hearing from toxoplasmosis.

Rebellious Kids and Hearing Aids

A common problem that parents of deaf and hard of hearing kids seem to face, is that as kids get older, they may be less willing to wear their hearing aids in school.  Have you dealt with this? What advice would you give to a parent now facing this challenge? Post your advice to the newest Readers Respond page.

Congrats. You've Got One of Each.

Dianrez added her own experience to the Readers Respond page on Parents Reactions to Deafness. After having twins, the hospital informed them via a note with minimal information that one of the twins was deaf.  They received more help from the local school for the deaf.

Deaf Photographers

Photography is something deaf people have done for more than a century. You don't have to be able to hear to wield a camera. Here are some deaf photographers, past and present.

Deaf? Don't Immigrate to Canada.

Canada's policy on legal immigration is that immigrants can not have medical conditions that might present a burden on Canada's health care and social service systems. As a result, Canada denied legal permanent residency to a family with a deaf boy, even after the boy received cochlear implants. A court overrruled that decision, but the final decision still has to be made by the visa office.

She's Deaf. Here's a Card. Have a Nice Day.

Those three sentences sum up the experience of a young mother whose baby failed hearing screening tests before leaving the hospital. Read her experience on the Readers Respond page on Parents' Reaction to Deafness.  I have yet to receive a submission from a reader reporting a positive experience before leaving the hospital after giving birth to a deaf baby.
