Indiana election chief found guilty of voter fraud

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana’s top elections official could lose his job and his freedom after jurors convicted him of multiple voter fraud-related charges early Saturday, leaving in flux the fate of one of the state’s most powerful positions. Republican Secretary of State Charlie White has held on to his office for more than a year despite being accused of lying about his address on voter registration forms. A Hamilton County jury found White guilty of six of seven felony charges, including false registration, voting in another precinct, submitting a false ballot, theft and two counts of perjury. He was acquitted …

No more Naptown: Super Bowl boosts Indy’s image

Indianapolis was once called Naptown and India-No-Place for a reason. Native son Kurt Vonnegut Jr. referred to it in 1970 as “the 500-mile speedway race, and then 364 days of miniature golf, and then the 500-mile speedway race again.” People used to roam city streets on Sundays, picking off pigeons with shotguns as part of “Operation Pigeon-Rid.” For decades, there was no reason to stay downtown after dark. This week, as 150,000 visitors descended on a new, vibrant district before Super Bowl Sunday, even cynics agreed that the city had successfully shed its image as a bastion of boredom in …

Indiana 911 funding plans would equalize phone fees
The fees tacked onto bills for landline and cellphones for 911 emergency services would become more equalized under proposals that Indiana legislators are considering as they look to shore up funding for counties’ emergency dispatch centers, which have lost millions of dollars as phone users have shifted from landlines to cellular plans. Separate plans approved by the Senate and House would increase the monthly fees charged to cellphones and generally reduce the now-higher fees on landlines in what legislators say is an attempt to stabilize funding for 911 services. Both plans would set uniform monthly fees across the state for …

PORTER COUNTY, Ind.- A semi-trailer truck driver was killed early Saturday along the Indiana Toll Road when he hit a horse trailer that had broken free from an SUV. The wreck happened about 12:23 a.m. on the Indiana Toll Road just east of State Road 49 and the Chesterton exit, according to a press release from Indiana State Police. The trailer went through the median and crossed into eastbound lanes, said the release. The semi, pulling double …

Santorum campaign fights to get on Indiana ballot

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is fighting an Indiana election board’s ruling that he does not have enough support to appear on the state ballot in the May 8 primary. All statewide candidates are required to obtain 500 valid signatures from each of the state’s nine congressional districts in order to be placed on the ballot. The Marion County Board of Elections has ruled that Santorum fell 24 signatures short in Indiana’s 7th District. Santorum told reporters in Missouri Friday that he is challenging the ruling. Indiana supporters say the board incorrectly threw out 200 signatures submitted …

MUNCIE (AP) — State police say a man who fired on two Muncie police officers is dead, one officer is hospitalized in stable condition and the other was treated and released following a shootout in a convenience store parking lot near the Ball State University campus. State police Sgt. John Bowling says authorities don’t know why the man began shooting at police. He says the man was sitting in his car backed into a parking spot and began shooting through his windshield when an unmarked police car and a marked police car pulled in. The driver of the unmarked car …

Komen drops plans to cut Planned Parenthood grants

NEW YORK — For leaders of the nation’s pre-eminent breast-cancer charity, it was a firestorm they didn’t see coming — and couldn’t withstand. Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Friday abandoned plans to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood. The dramatic retreat followed a three-day furor that resounded across the Internet, in Congress and — perhaps most tellingly — among Komen affiliates who openly rebelled, suggesting the leadership had bowed to anti-abortion pressure. “We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” a Komen statement …

Trump gets to know Romney; makes endorsement

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Donald Trump on Thursday announced his endorsement of Mitt Romney for president, saying the former Massachusetts governor is “not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country we all love.” The reality show host and real estate mogul appeared with Romney and his wife, Ann, at a packed news conference at the Las Vegas hotel that bears Trump’s name. Romney said he was honored to receive the endorsement, but hoped even more to win the endorsement of Nevada voters. The state holds presidential caucuses Saturday. The endorsement came after a topsy-turvy set …

Komen drops plans to cut Planned Parenthood grants

NEW YORK (AP) — The Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast-cancer charity on Friday abandoned plans to deny funding to Planned Parenthood. The startling decision came after three days of virulent criticism that resounded across the Internet, jeopardizing Komen’s iconic image. “We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” a Komen statement said. As first reported by The Associated Press on Tuesday, Komen had adopted criteria excluding Planned Parenthood from future grants for breast-cancer screenings because it was under government investigation, citing a …

NWI work force awaits RTW rules

Now that Indiana is a right-to-work state, Northwest Indiana union leaders say the region’s labor market raises questions of the new law. The region’s close proximity to Illinois means a number of Hoosiers, who now live in a right-to-work state, work across state lines in a state without the policy. Comparatively, Illinois residents, who live in a state where unions still can require workers to pay fees for representation, may work in Indiana, where that practice now is barred. The law took effect immediately Wednesday and affects labor contracts renewed or entered into after March 14. The Indiana Department of …

The 51-year-old Cheshire, England, native helped guide the orchestra through a recession while handling one conductor’s departure and welcoming a young successor. The Indianapolis Star reports that his abrupt departure surprised some in the Indianapolis arts community. The orchestra says vice president of finance and …

Union protesters gather at Super Bowl village
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Protesters upset by Indiana’s passage of right-to-work legislation showed up with signs during NBC’s “Today” show broadcast from downtown Indianapolis’ Super Bowl village. The Indianapolis Star and WISH-TV report that dozens of protesters holding or wearing protest signs mixed with NFL fans as Al Roker and Ann Curry reported live Friday morning from the village. The protesters tried to position themselves within the camera shot during the broadcasts. Gov. Mitch Daniels on Wednesday signed a bill passed by the Legislature that makes Indiana the 23rd state to ban labor contracts that require workers to pay union representation …

South Bend boy, 7, shot in arm when bullets hit home

SOUTH BEND (AP) — Police say a 7-year-old boy was shot in the arm when a hail of gunfire struck a South Bend home where a woman was inside with her five children. The boy was hospitalized with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm following Thursday night’s shooting. South Bend police Capt. Scott Ruszkowski says the boy’s mother suffered a cut to her arm, possibly by flying glass from a shattered window. The boy injured in the shooting was sitting with his mother and a sibling at the time of the attack. Neighbors say they heard the sound …

Accused killer of 5 won’t face death penalty
BROOKVILLE (AP) — Prosecutors won’t seek the death penalty against a southeastern Indiana man accused of shooting to death five people in an apparent drug dispute. WISH-TV reports court records show the Franklin County prosecutor’s office filed an amendment to charges against David Ison. The amended charges seek a sentence of life in prison without the chance for parole if the 46-year-old Glenwood man is convicted in the Sept. 25 shooting rampage. Ison has pleaded not guilty to five counts of murder in the slayings of 50-year-old Roy Napier; his estranged 47-year-old wife, Angela; their children, 23-year-old Melissa Napier and …
